What to Bring to Spirit Camp


ALL PARTICIPANTS MUST BRING

ALL Drum Majors, Brass, Woodwinds, & Percussionists MUST BRING YOUR INSTRUMENT AND A FOLDING MUSIC STAND FOR MUSIC REHEARSALS! THE COLLEGE CANNOT PROVIDE.

However, Drum Major Percussionists and Tuba players DO NOT HAVE to bring your marching or keyboard instruments. PERCUSSIONISTS – You must BRING YOUR OWN MALLET INSTRUMENTS, ALL DRUMS, ETC. DO NOT FORGET – the camp nor the college has any equipment to loan!

  1. FOLDING MUSIC STAND should be brought by Drum Majors, Brass, Woodwinds & Percussion students
  2. PLEASE DO NOT BRING VALUABLE ITEMS OR LARGE SUMS OF MONEY TO CAMP!  The camp cannot take responsibility for lost or stolen items.
  3. Completely casual clothing - tennis shoes, shirts, shorts, etc.  All students are required to wear sneakers or full shoes to class. 
  4. Towels, wash cloths, twin bed linens (see following note), pillow, toilet articles (soap, shampoo, toothbrush, etc.), alarm clock.  Dorm rooms have Twin mattresses, so bring bed sheets and pillow.  Sleeping bags work also.
  5. We are outside (it is HOT!) – wear sunscreen lotion, hat or cap, water jug to take for outside rehearsals.  Due to the tornado damage JSU experienced, everyone will be outside for most of the time. 
  6. EQUIPMENT such as flag, baton, horn, drum, reeds, etc.
  7. Spending money for soda/snack machines, etc.  Some students order pizza at night at their own expense.
  8. Parental Consent Form - attach to it a photocopy of front & back of insurance card.
  9.          Camp Rules form signed by student and parents.
  10.        If you anticipate needing a knee or ankle brace, please bring one with you.
  11.        IMPORTANT!  If student brings cell phone or computer to camp – Spirit Camp cannot be liable in case of theft, loss, or damage.  Cell phones must be turned OFF during classes.
  1. NOTE:  We emphasize again to bring SUNSCREEN and SUN HAT and WATER JUG to take water to drink while practicing outside!  It is always VERY HOT during camp week.
  2. ADDITIONAL ITEMS TO BRING FOR INDIVIDUAL CLASSES
  3. All DRUM MAJORS and LEADERSHIP STUDENTS (Brass, Woodwind, Flag and Rifle) bring:
  4. Notebook, pens/pencils for note taking, your woodwind or brass instrument, or your flag, rifle or weapon. Instrumentalists – everyone must bring folding music stand, as the college does not have stands to loan to us.
  5. DRUM MAJORS - Every drum major (except for percussionists) should bring your instrument and a folding music stand. (This also includes tuba players.) We will be conducting live rehearsals rather than conducting just to taped music. The music will be provided online for digital download via computer or smartphone (instructions to be provided at camp).
  6. PERCUSSION STUDENTS - percussion equipment, tuning key, sticks, etc.   If possible, bring spare head(s) & extra sticks.  Leadership Students - bring pad & pencils for note taking as well as your equipment. 
  7. COLOR GUARD CLASSES - Please remember, all campers are responsible for bringing their own equipment (flags, batons, weapons, etc).  Guard Leadership Students - see “Leadership” section above.

BAND DIRECTORS - ITEMS TO BRING

  1. Directors – Attendance certificates will be provided which you should be able to present for your certification for CEU, SDU or PLU credit.  IF YOU WANT THE Credit, there is a $20 processing fee (check to Spirit Camp).   Also bring the following:
  2. Bring drum sticks and practice pad.  You really will need it.
  3. Bring your laptop, iPad, or smart phone – some of your sessions will be all electronic.
  4. 3 favorite NEW pieces of music plus score plus recording if available.
  5. Brass mouthpiece (2 if possible).
  6. Casual clothes, tennis shoes, sun hat for outdoor activities.
  7. Pencils / pens. 
  8. "War Stories” required.  Bring good and bad memories of your work to share with us all.
  9. Don’t forget your sense of humor.
ADDITIONAL ITEMS TO BRING FOR INDIVIDUAL CLASSES
All DRUM MAJORS and LEADERSHIP STUDENTS (Brass, Woodwind, Flag, Rifle)
Notebook, pens/pencils for note taking, your woodwind or brass instrument, or your flag, rifle or baton. Instrumentalists – everyone must bring folding music stand - college will have NONE for us to use.

Every drum major should bring your instrument, even percussionists and tuba players, and a folding music stand. We will be conducting live rehearsals rather than conducting just to taped music.
PERCUSSION STUDENTS
Percussion equipment, tuning key, sticks, etc. If possible, bring spare head(s) & extra sticks. Leadership Students - bring pad & pencils for note taking as well as your equipment.
AUXILIARY PERFORMANCE CLASSES
Please remember, all campers are responsible for bringing their own equipment (flags, weapons, etc). Auxiliary Leadership Students - see “Leadership” section above.
GUARD INSTRUCTORS/SPONSORS
Color guard EQUIPMENT for hands-on class. It might be helpful to you if you can bring a music tape of your upcoming Fall show music in order to get some help with equipment ideas.
BAND DIRECTORS - ITEMS TO BRING
Directors - CEU, SDU or PLU credit (3.0 Continuing Education, Staff Development or Professional Learning Units) is available to you. Also bring the following:
  1. 3 favorite NEW pieces of music plus score plus recording if available.
  2. Drill writing supplies or equipment you use for your band.
  3. Brass mouthpiece (2 if possible).
  4. Casual clothes, tennis shoes, sun hat for outdoor activities.
  5. Pencils / pens.
  6. Video tapes of your band if you have them and would share them with the other directors.
  7. If you have any of the following which you use for your band and would not mind sharing them, bring: Band Handbook, Leadership Manual, Recruitment Letters, Permission Forms, etc.
  8. "War Stories” required. Bring good and bad memories of your work to share with us all.
  9. Don't forget your sense of humor.
  10. The optimum experience from the Directors Workshop can be gained by bringing your scores and tapes and by taking this opportunity to get a good portion of your upcoming Fall show written.
